How to Apply & Remove Woochie Latex Prosthetics
Your Step-by-Step Special FX Guide from The Makeup Altar
Transform yourself into a wicked witch, zombie, vampire, or fantastical creature with Woochie by Cinema Secrets latex prosthetics! The secret to a realistic application is proper prep, secure adhesion, seamless blending, and professional makeup techniques.
What You'll Need
- Woochie Latex Prosthetic
- Spirit Gum Adhesive & Spirit Gum Remover
- Liquid Latex (for blending edges)
- Castor Sealer (recommended for traditional cream makeup)
- Cream Makeup, Special FX Color Wheel, or Rubber Mask Grease (RMG)
- Translucent Setting Powder & Powder Puff
- Makeup Sponges, Brushes & Cotton Swabs
- Setting Spray or Final Seal (optional)
- Stage Blood, Thick Blood, or Scab Blood (for wound effects)
Step 1: Prep Your Skin
Start with clean, dry, oil-free skin. Remove all makeup, moisturizers, and skincare products from the application area. Adhesives won't hold properly on oily skin.
PRO TIP: Test the placement of your prosthetic before applying adhesive. Carefully trim excess material if needed.
Step 2: Apply Spirit Gum
Apply a thin layer of Spirit Gum to the back of the prosthetic where it contacts your skin and, if needed, to the corresponding skin area.
Gently tap the adhesive until tacky, then carefully position the appliance and press firmly into place, working from the center outward. Make sure all edges are securely attached.
PRO TIP: More glue doesn't mean better adhesion! Thin, tacky layers work best.
Step 3: Blend the Edges with Liquid Latex
Using a wedge sponge, stipple a thin layer of Liquid Latex along the edges where the prosthetic meets your skin. Feather slightly onto the surrounding skin to disguise the seam.
Allow to dry completely, repeating with additional thin layers as needed. Lightly powder once dry to remove tackiness.
PRO TIP: Several thin layers create a smoother, more natural transition than one thick application.
Step 4: Seal & Color
For traditional cream makeup, apply a thin layer of Castor Sealer over the latex as directed to help the makeup adhere evenly. Alternatively, use Rubber Mask Grease (RMG), specially formulated for latex and rubber appliances.
Apply your makeup using brushes or sponges, blending colors beyond the prosthetic and onto your natural skin.
For wounds and horror effects, layer reds, purples, browns, and blacks to create depth and realism. For natural features, match and blend with your surrounding skin tone.
PRO TIP: Build color in thin layers. Multiple tones and textures create a much more realistic finish.
Step 5: Powder, Set & Finish
Set cream makeup by gently pressing translucent powder over the application. Brush away excess powder and finish with a compatible setting spray if desired.
For wounds, apply Stage Blood, Thick Blood, or Scab Blood last to create realistic fresh or dried injuries.
PRO TIP: Keep wet blood effects for the very end, after powdering and setting your makeup.
How to Remove Your Prosthetic
- Remove surface makeup: Gently wipe away excess blood and makeup without pulling on the appliance.
- Dissolve the adhesive: Apply Spirit Gum Remover along the edges with a cotton swab. Allow it to loosen the glue, then slowly lift the prosthetic while working additional remover underneath. Never rip or pull!
- Cleanse your skin: Remove remaining adhesive with the appropriate remover, wash gently, and moisturize.
- Clean & store: If the prosthetic is reusable, gently clean according to its care instructions, air-dry completely, and store away from heat and sunlight.
PRO TIP: Always use the remover designed for your adhesive. If using Pros-Aide instead of Spirit Gum, you'll need a compatible Pros-Aide remover.
Important Safety Tips
Woochie latex prosthetics contain natural rubber latex. Do not use if you have a latex allergy. Patch-test adhesives and makeup products as directed, avoid irritated or broken skin, and keep adhesives and liquid latex away from eyes, lips, and sensitive areas. Stop use immediately if irritation occurs.
